Manchester City-Domination

Pep Guardiola will join Manchester City from Bayern Munich ahead of the 2016/17 seasonThe Sky Blues have a chance to win the League title at home turf against their neighbours and fiercest rivals, Manchester United on Saturday.  While sealing the deal in front of United’s players and fans is the perfect icing on the cake, the coronation is merely a formality. Guardiola’s side has looked a cut above the rest this season, collecting 84 points out of a possible 93. If they manage to beat United, City will become the fastest side to win the title since the inception of the League in 1992. Their exploits have seen this team being compared to the Invincibles and Fergie’s treble winning side. But how did Guardiola’s young guns turn the most competitive league in the world into a one horse race? Here are 3 key reasons.

  1. Defense

Eyebrows were raised when City splashed more than 140 million Euros on 3 defensive players this summer. Walker, Mendy and Ederson, each a world record signing in their respective position arrived at the Etihad with massive pressure to justify their price tag. But the spending spree has paid off as City sit on 21 goals conceded , the fewest in the league. Walker and Mendy have been sensational, playing the modern game’s attacking full back role to perfection. But it is Ederson who has been a true revelation. Arriving from Benfica as a young, talented shot stopper, he has moulded into one of the League’s best keepers in just 1 season. Not only is his positioning and decision-making great, his distribution is arguably the best in the league. Stones and Otamendi have shrugged off disappointing campaigns to marshal the center, with Stones in particular showing why he is so highly regarded in the country. With the addition of Laporte, City’s defense looks set for greater things in the future.

  1. Creative Midfield

Here is the man you thought about after reading the words Man City and domination together. Kevin De Bruyne. Calling him the World’s best midfielder at the moment wouldn’t be an overstatement. He has been scintillating this season racking up 7 goals and 15 assists. As the Belgian has been at the center of lavish praise throughout the campaign, David Silva has quietly gone about his business as he so often does. He sits only behind De Bruyne in the assist charts with 11, shining in his absence. While Fernandinho has been great at providing an extra layer of solidity at the back, it is this duo that tears defenses apart, week in week out.

  1. Manager

The managerial quality in the Premier League has never been better. But Guardiola has once again proved why he is considered by many to be the best in the business. Finally after adapting to the Premier League, he has shown himself to be the master tactician that saw Barcelona win the treble, playing sublime football and amassing results at the same time. He has taken young, talented players like Sane, Sterling and De Bruyne to a whole new level. While it can be argued that City has access to infinite financial resources, credit must be given to the manager for spending that wealth wisely. City are as relentless and ruthless without the ball as they are with it and this is the quality that makes them one of the most feared sides around the world. Guardiola’s passion and ambition has rubbed off on the players as they go around not winning but destroying quality opposition.

A world-class manager, a young and balanced team, a well run academy…looks like a great time to be a City fan.
