Yaya Toure’s Platform for Greatness

Coming off an excellent English Premier League campaign, Yaya Toure is on the brink of achieving something most Africans have failed at; greatness.

On June 14, 2014, Toure will take center stage in Brazil as Ivory Coast plays its first group stage game. For the midfield mastermind, this is the chance to prove to the world that he is just as good as the greatest midfielders and players around the world.

The Ivorian maestro was Manchester City’s best player this season, as the club captured its second championship in three years. He led the team 20 goals and nine assists from 35 appearances.

Toure’s eye-catching, explosive, and intelligent style of play left his biggest critics salivating. The 30-year-old anchored the Citizens’ star-studded midfield with utmost plum, was a helping-hand for the shaky defense, and he started most of his team’s offensive endeavors.

For a midfielder, Toure’s statistics are mind-boggling. According to squawka.com, he completed 90 percent of his passes, created 40 chances and had an astonishing 54 percent shot accuracy. On the defensive end, City’s box-to-box midfielder had 34 clearances, 24 interceptions and 3 blocks.

It’s an unquestionable fact that Toure is very talented, but some people don’t consider him to be as talented as the likes of Mesut Özil and Andrés Iniesta. Toure critics believe that his midfield partner, Fernandinho, is behind his success this season. Although this is somewhat true, these critics fail to acknowledge Özil and Iniesta’s midfield partners.

At Barcelona, Iniesta has Xavi and Cesc Fabregas playing alongside him. And when Özil was at Real Madrid, Xabi Alonso and Luka Modrić served as the Robin to his Batman.

At the World Cup, Toure will either play alongside Cheick Tioté or Romaric in the heart of Ivory Coast’s midfield. In front of him will be an Arsenal of ruthless goal scorers, and the intelligent player will be tasked with creating goal scoring chances for them.

In its group stage, Ivory Coast faces stiff challenges from attack-minded Japan, defensively cautious Greece and a motivated Colombian side. In order to ensure safe passage through the group stage, Toure will have to lead the way for his country.

With players like Serge Aurier and his brother, Kolo Toure, in Ivory Coast’s back-line, Toure doesn’t need to worry about doing too much on the defensive end. Most of his attention would be focused on carving open opposition’s defenses.

With his superior passing abilities and players like Didier Drogba, Wilfried Bony, Gervinho and Salomon Kalou receiving those passes, Ivory Coast fans can expect to see lots of goals. Also his willingness to run and effective use of his upper body strength is no match for any player in the world. To make matters worse for his opponents, Toure possesses a powerful shot from distance.

With league play all wrapped up, Toure has an entire month to prepare for the world cup. The towering figure has set himself up to shock the world this summer, and with the help of his teammates, he could achieve the highly coveted legend status.
